Now that the reason December is one of the most important months for retailers has passed, it’s time for us to give a shout out to the hardworking warehouses and supply chain management leaders that brought your gifts directly to your doorstep.

In this Retail Tech News Roundup, we take a look at some of the top trends and stories in the warehouse and supply chain management space. So while you’re enjoying your gifts from your loved ones this holiday season, think about all the steps it has to take before it makes it under the tree.

These Days, the Holiday Magic Happens in Warehouses

Reema Khrais at Marketplace spoke with AMS warehouse worker Natalia Andrade about the magic behind the scenes of the “buy” button on your favorite e-tailer’s site. According to Khrais, “Nineteen-year-old Andrade spends her day speeding through a maze of products at a large warehouse outside Los Angeles. She grabs things like candles, socks and lipsticks, juggling nearly 25 different orders at once.”

Keeping Up With the Lightning Speed of Progress

Logistics networks are now a global affair for shipping companies. Juan Perez, Chief Information and Engineering Officer at UPS, shared some updates from the massive shipping leader in a recent byline on Media Plant about how they are embracing tech innovation to keep up with the ever-increasing pace of shipping expectations.

Perez wrote, “Think about the possibilities of machines that connect, learn and make decisions. Think about the transparency offered by hundreds of millions of sensors that monitor, calculate and then replace assumptions with actionable data in real time. Think about the transformation as these and scores of other innovations combine into a new age of intuitive supply chains.”

The Secret to a Successful Holiday Shopping Season: the Supply Chain

In a recent byline on Chain Store Age, Harriet Green, General Manager, IBM Watson Internet of Things, Customer Engagement and Education emphasized the importance of strong supply chains in the successful execution of holiday retail.

She stated, “The irony is, one missing link in the supply chain can lead to disruptions that can upset all the preparations retailers have made in their stores and on-line and the ultimate result is an unhappy customer.” She elaborates on all of the critical elements the supply chain contributes to and powers year-round, especially during the holiday shopping season.
