Modern Marketing Today (MMT): Tell us about your journey to Chief Marketing Officer.
Monica Kumar (MK): My path to CMO wasn’t exactly traditional. I started with a mechanical engineering degree and my first job was on a factory floor, but I soon realized that the factory life wasn’t for me. I wanted to be in front of people, making connections and sharing stories. So, I took a leap, got my MBA in Silicon Valley, and dove into tech marketing.
I focused on mastering each role, and kept my eyes peeled for opportunities that sparked my passion. It felt more like navigating a maze than climbing a ladder. Marketing became my platform to tell the stories of how technology improves lives. I saw it as an opportunity to show how technology is really a means to an end – it’s not about the solutions; it’s about their impact on our world, society and quality of life. That’s what truly excites me, and it’s what fueled my journey to CMO at Extreme Networks.
MMT: How can companies navigate the complexities of digital communication to build genuine connections with customers?
MK: The digital age has ushered in a new era of brand communication, one that throws out the old marketing playbook built on a facade of invincibility. Today’s customers are far more sophisticated. They crave authenticity and openness from the brands they interact with, and they have the power to research and connect with brands that resonate with them. Gone are the days of carefully crafted, one-sided messaging. Transparency and a genuine willingness to connect are now the keys to building trust and fostering long-term customer relationships.
So, how can companies navigate this shift in customer expectations? The answer lies in embracing open dialogue with their audience. This means actively listening to customer feedback and incorporating it into their strategies. Whether it’s adapting to evolving market demands, like the growing importance of sustainability or the surge in digital-first experiences, companies that demonstrate a willingness to learn and adapt demonstrate their commitment to meeting customer needs. Open dialogue also involves openly addressing challenges. When faced with issues like supply chain disruptions or social controversies, companies that communicate honestly about the situation and the steps they’re taking to address them build empathy and a stronger connection with their audience.
MMT: What are some actionable strategies for integrating authenticity into the core of your brand identity?
MK: Authenticity thrives on genuine voices, so empower your employees to embody your brand’s spirit, from how they interact with each other to how they treat customers. Let them take center stage on social media, at industry events, or even during customer interactions. This isn’t just about giving your employees a platform; it’s about showcasing the passionate and talented people who make your brand tick.
Be upfront and honest about setbacks, necessary product improvements or even internal debates. Let your audience see how you grapple with challenges and strive for improvement – open communication builds trust. Take for example the 2013 Skittles saga, where the brand’s decision to replace lime with green apple flavor upset customers. The company eventually chose to admit its mistake, embrace the negative feedback, and ultimately bring back the lime flavor; in doing so, Skittles was able to win back fans and showcase its commitment to listening to its audience.
MMT: How can AI be used to enhance, not replace, human connection in marketing strategies?
MK: AI offers a powerful toolkit for marketing, but it should never replace the fundamental need for human connection. The recent controversy surrounding Google’s AI project Gemini exemplifies this perfectly. When the AI platform started to generate racially insensitive content, Google’s leadership didn’t try to sweep it under the rug. The company openly acknowledged its mistake, demonstrating accountability and a commitment to do better. This willingness to be vulnerable is crucial in today’s AI-driven world.
AI can analyze vast amounts of data to identify customer preferences and behavior patterns that might be missed by traditional methods, which can then be used by human marketers to craft targeted and relevant campaigns that resonate with specific audiences. AI can also personalize recommendations to individual customers, creating a more engaging and relevant experience that fosters a stronger connection between brand and customer.
Additionally, AI can free up marketers’ time by automating repetitive tasks such as data analysis, content scheduling, and ad campaign management. This allows marketers to focus on more strategic initiatives, like developing creative campaigns and building relationships with customers. Chatbots powered by AI can provide 24/7 customer support and answer basic inquiries, acting as a valuable tool for initial interactions. However, for solving complex issues or building trust, human interaction remains irreplaceable.
